EARLY HARVEST LETTUCE IN CONTAINERS

OUR FIRST LETTUCE HARVEST OF THE SPRINGTIME

There’s a quiet kind of magic that happens when the very first leaves of spring begin to gather in your hands… tender, bright, and impossibly fresh. This week marked my first harvest of homegrown lettuce, and oh—what a moment it is.

My little container garden sits just high enough to stay out of reach of the usual garden mischief-makers. Elevated pots keep the slugs at bay, while a soft blanket of cedar mulch around each newly planted start adds an extra layer of protection—discouraging both slugs and curious birds. The result? Early, beautiful harvests that feel like a secret between me and the season. See my short video above

What do you call a snail without a shell?
LessCargo.

Each morning, I step outside with my garden scissors and a basket, and gently gather only the outer leaves from each plant. It’s a simple rhythm—snip, gather, admire—leaving the centers untouched so they continue to grow and offer up more of their tender goodness in the days ahead. It’s a garden that gives… and keeps on giving.

Oops…I wet my plants!

Watering is easy and forgiving. When the rain takes a break, I give each pot a deep drink every 1–2 days, enough so water flows lightly from the bottom. Lettuce loves moisture, but not soggy roots—so a good soak followed by a slight dry-out keeps them happy. In this early season, they thrive in full sun, soaking up every gentle ray. As the days warm, I simply shift the pots into partial sun, keeping those leaves sweet and delicate instead of bitter.

The soil does most of the work for me. I use a quality potting mix with time-release fertilizer, and truly—that’s all they need for the entire season. No fuss, no extras… just steady, happy growth.

Of course, no garden story is complete without a little mischief… and that’s where Ihana comes in. She has declared herself the official lettuce inspector and will absolutely sneak a leaf (or three) whenever she thinks I’m not looking. There’s something about those tender greens she simply cannot resist—and honestly, I can’t blame her.

Simple Garden Lettuce Toss

A handful of your freshly snipped greens
A drizzle of good olive oil
A splash of balsamic vinegar and squeeze of lemon
1 small clove garlic, finely minced
Pinch of sea salt fresh cracked pepper and fresh grated parmesan cheese

Gently toss everything together just before serving. That’s it. Simple, fresh, and utterly delicious—the kind of flavor that only comes from leaves you’ve just picked moments before.

This is the joy of spring in a pot… a little elevated garden, a watchful eye on the weather, a mischievous helper, and a bowl of greens that tastes like sunshine itself.
