Recipe – DOBRO’S BOOMERANG WINGS

Meet Dobro, a handsome Australian Shepherd with a joyful grin that instantly pulled me in. When his photo came through my DOG IN THE KITCHEN™ Inspiration Project, he didn’t just catch my eye — he herded my imagination straight into the test kitchen.

Aussies have a way of doing that… and Dobro was not about to let this idea stray.
That’s how Dobro’s Boomerang Wings came to life.

Let’s be honest — chicken wings already have that perfect little boomerang shape, so the name practically chose itself. These crispy wings are coated in a sweet, garlicky sauce with a bright splash of lime and just enough heat to keep things interesting. They’re easy to bake or air fry (my personal favorite for that golden, crispy finish), and perfect for sharing — though you might not want to.

My resident SAUCE BOSS, Soot, has been busy “quality control testing” and is now happily smearing this stuff on just about everything in sight. Consider yourself warned — once you make it, these wings have a way of disappearing… and coming right back for more and the sauce could possibly disappear even faster! See the SOOTNOTES in the recipe below for ways to customize your sauce and dry rub.

A special thank you to Dobro’s amazing owner Norie Calvert, and her mom, my dear friend Jan Lockhart, for capturing all the wonderful photos of Dobro, their home cooked wings, and the kitchen swag featured in this post. Your photos brings this whole recipe and story to life in the most joyful and delicious way .

Dobro’s Boomerang Wings have officially landed! His recipe card, matching potholders, and more tasty kitchen swag are now waiting for you at the shopping link above with much more on the way

CUSTOMIZE YOUR SAUCE BLEND
SOOT the cat is my official SAUCE BOSS in the kitchen. She’s very clear about what she likes… though lifting a paw to actually make it is apparently beneath her job description.  Still, she insists this sauce “SOOTS her just fine.”   But she also believes a good sauce should keep your guests guessing. If you’re feeling adventurous:
  • Grate in a little fresh ginger and adding a splash of soy sauce for a tasty teriyaki-style twist.
  • Stir in a teaspoon of frozen orange or pineapple juice concentrate. It adds a bright little zing that gives the dipping (or glazing) experience a whole new personality.
CUSTOMIZE THE WING SEASONING MIX
There are many ways you can tweek this dry rub .  Heres just one to try:
  •  Make a  GREEK inspired rub by switching out the  Cajun seasoning for a Greek or Lemon Pepper blend
  • Then, switch the lime  for  lemon juice in the sauce and stir in a dollop  of Greek yogurt.  Sprinkle the cooked wings with slivered fresh mint and lemon wedges to squeeze on each serving.
