Purrfect Poké Bowl
A Little Taste of Hawaii… From Our Own Kitchen
Not every recipe in Dog in the Kitchen™ begins with a road trip, a passport stamp, or a favorite destination. Some begin with a simple question:
“What sounds good for dinner tonight?”
Poké bowls have become one of our favorite easy meals at home. They come together quickly, are packed with fresh flavors, and everyone can build a bowl that’s uniquely their own. That makes them just as much fun to assemble as they are to eat.
The word poké (pronounced poh-kay) simply means “to slice” or “cut crosswise” in Hawaiian, referring to the cubes of fresh fish traditionally used in the dish. Over the years, poké has traveled far beyond the islands, blending beautifully with Japanese flavors like soy sauce, sesame oil, rice, nori, and furikake. It’s a delicious meeting of two island cultures that feels perfectly at home in our kitchen.
For us, the best part is the creativity.

Some nights we use sushi-grade ahi tuna with creamy spicy sauce. Other times we make a family-friendly version using crispy chicken tenders or nuggets for anyone who isn’t quite ready for raw fish. There’s no wrong way to build a poké bowl—just start with rice, add your favorite toppings, and arrange everything into a colorful little work of art.
Green onions are always a must around here, but after that the possibilities seem endless. Avocado, cucumber, mango, pineapple, carrots, edamame, sesame seeds, crunchy onions, seaweed… every bowl tells its own story. SOOT insists the prettiest bowls taste the best.

So whether you’re introducing someone to poké for the very first time or creating your own signature combination, don’t be afraid to experiment. A recipe like this isn’t about following rules—it’s about discovering your favorite bowl one delicious bite at a time.
After all, every great adventure doesn’t have to begin with a suitcase.
Sometimes all it takes is a bowl, a pair of chopsticks… and a curious little black cat watching from the counter.
Happy cooking,
Sandra, Ihana & SOOT …and of course Steve!!!
