9-24-09 More images from the past 2 days

I decided since I got up a few hours early I would spend the time before we go out today sorting through a few more photos from our past 2 days in Cairo and Giza.  Hope you enjoy!!  More to come today after our trip to the Egypt Museum.  This is one of the largest museums in the world…some say they like it better than the Louvre.

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

A sweet way to tour.  Just our guide, the driver and our van.  The bus behind us cost close  to the same for a large group tour

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Behind me is one of the visitor buildings at the Great Pyramids

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

OMG the haggling was crazy with the onsite vendors.  You always try to get things for 50% less.  The lady to the right was like a character at the Minnesota Ren Fest.  She was so pushy and could sell you a dry oasis!!

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Our first view of the Sphinx over the edge of the quarry .  They are doing a bit of work on the body which was interesting

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

This lady to the left cracked me up.  She had a hat with a built in beacball colored umbrella on it.  In contrast with the Muslim  women it was pretty funny.  I missed the shot with  the umbrella  hat still on ………..dang!

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Another camel shot…Love the fancy threads this guy is wearing..I see a jewelry design in the works here!

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

This shows just how close to the pyramids you can get.  I will have to admit I was extremely disappointed that they let people crawl all over the pyramids.  After all this is a World Heritage site.  It would be nice if future generations can enjoy this beautiful area too.  This is something we hadn’t seen in other countries with National Treasures.

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

I love this image, but again…kind of wish  there were more respect for the site.  These folks were not an issue.  It was the kids carving with sticks in the sandstone that bothered me the most.

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Beautiful lighting on the pyramids here.  The big puffy clouds were casting awesome shadows

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

This one just screams out EGYPT!!!  The security was everywhere!! Speaking of security.  At our hotel we have security guards sitting on each floor and practically in front of our door.  Getting in and out of the hotel involves an airport style scanner and armed guards as you drive into the parking lot AND at the front of the lobby.  Yes, I’m thrilled at the extra measures but it is a little weird the first couple of days to  be scoped out at every turn…lol!

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Steves Birthday cake surprise I arranged prior to leaving the U.S. with Mohammed our hotel manager.,  They have been so fantastic here!

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Happy Birthday boy!!  Liz, does this look familiar when we celebrated Steves Bday in China?

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

They love Twinkies here!! They are on every street cart

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

Some more street food…Kebabs are the BEST!! This was at a night market

EGYPT 9/22 and 9/23

I treated Steve to dinner at the top of Windows on the World restaurant at the Ramses Hilton on the Nile.  All the boats below were just  beautiful and our first view of how the night life is in Cairo.  The food was fantastic!!!

Sunset over the nile through the restaurant window

    Hi Sandy,
Glad you took the time to add the extra photos of your pyramid tour – Loved the one of the Sphinx with the pyramid behind, and the camel in his colorful garb- and you could just tell that lady vendor was pushy! You are making a trip to Egypt sound very appealing and not so scary (that terrorist thing has gotten to me obviously). Luv’in it. Jan

Sandra, I’m with Jan…I loved the picture of the Sphinx with the pyramid behind…I think that’s my favorite! (but that sunset over the Nile is right up there too!) The camel garb is so colorful and bright it makes me smile 🙂 Steve, your cake looks soooo yummy…I hope it brings you a sweet year!

Ah Egypt… one of my favorite places! Standing next to the pyramid has to be experienced to be believed. It is just so huge and overwhelming.

The photos are beautiful as always and it sounds like you are having a truly wonderful time! Take care and keep sending those photos!
